The Scottish Parliament

Located next to Dynamic Earth and the Palace of Holyrood House in Holyrood Park at the foot of the Royal Mile and within the UNESCO world heritage site, this architecturally stunning seat of government was opened in 2004 after a turbulent period of construction over the course of 5 years. The building was designed by the Catalan architect Enric Miralles, who died before seeing his vision complete. The cost of constucting the Scottish Parliament reached exorbitant levels of over £400 million despite initial estimates of around £40 million. Following a major inquiry, and the general condemnation of the management of the project by the Scotish people and the press, the anger subsided and the building was welcomed by academics and critics as a spectacular piece of architecture that brings the Scottish Capital together the Scottish Landscape, culture and people. Access to the building is free of charge, but may be restricted at certain times due to parliamentary business. You can even go in to the chamber and watch the debate in action. You need a ticket for this - these are free of charge, but it is best to book in advance since the chambers can be very busy.
