main navigation:Possibly the most haunted place in Edinburgh, Mary King’s Close has one of the most traumatic histories of anywhere in the World. It was once a hive of activity, a bustling street, that, in 1753, had the City Chambers built on top of it, burying a full street, the houses and shops of which act as the foundations for the new building above. What is left is a spooky scene, largely intact and eerie. People have only been allowed to come down here since 2003, after 250 years of dark silence. Rumour has that Plague-ridden families that lived in these houses were sealed down here to die together by the constructors of the new building. You will be aware on your way round that there is a well of difficult, bad feelings down here, and your guide will perhaps explain further why. Not for the faint-hearted…

Perhaps after your ghostly experience Always Sunday is the perfect antidote to the 18th century gloom. In fact, even if you’re just passing, Always Sunday is a great spot on the Royal Mile to stop in for a cheering cup of fair-trade tea or coffee and a world-class slice of home-made cak. If you fancy something stronger there is a selection of wines and bottled beers. They are open for breakfast, and the Deli counter is well-stocked with feel-good food to set you up for the day.
