Gladstones Land

Operated by the National Trust for Scotland and located on the Royal Mile, Gladstone's Land is a fine example of an Edinburgh Old Town apartment block or 'land'. It once belonged to Thomas Gledstanes, a prosperous merchant, who purchased it in 1617. He enlarged the building and rented out the apartments to tenants from various social classes and financial backgrounds. The building comprises six floors, two of which are open to the public, and are authentically furnished to reflect 17th Century Edinburgh life. The painted ceilings and walls within are particularly remarkable and together with th location and size of the house serve to highlight the social standing of the original owner. The reconstructed Shop booth is stocked with replica 17th Century goods.

The house is open from the April to October, Monday-Saturday 1000-1700, and Sundays 1400-1700.
