Blair Street Vaults

This 17th Century living complex beneath the streets of Edinburgh is a dark and fascinating glimpse into the past. Your guide is well-versed in the grizzly history of the vaults and the City, and will tell you the uncomfortable truth on your way through the Vaults. Down here is the white room, said to be the most haunted room in Edinburgh, which has a church stone inexplicably set into the doorway. Other rooms are inexplicably hard to cross. After the tour you get to sit down and enjoy a soothing drink whilst the guide will explain more about the troubled history of life in the plaque-infested underbelly of 17th Century Edinburgh: bodysnatchers, witches, murderers and superstitions.

To find the Vaults, head to Tron Kirk (half way down the Royal Mile opposite the Bank Hotel) and down the steep hill leading to the Cowgate, which is Blair street. On the left down there you will find Mercat Tours. They will be your guide to Edinburgh above as well as below ground, and pride themselves on the historical accuracy of the information provided, which is all checked out and delivered by real historians. You can find out more by calling them on 0131 225 5445

Cabaret Voltaire

This aptly named subterranean club is one of the essential Edinburgh live venues. There are two stone-vaulted rooms, hosting some of the best known club events in Edinburgh.

It caters for all genres of dance music, ranging from the acclaimed house night Ultragroove, to the exclusive Scottish spin-off of award-winning eclectic Leeds club SugarBeat. It was also once home to the legendary Fleamarket Funk, and other historical landmarks in the good-time vibe.

Open seven nights a week, Cabaret Voltaire is a seriously cool place to come and get down with a stylish, fun and unassuming crowd.
