Nearly all caves on the island (and there are a lot) were once sacred caves. Most of the caves lay high in the mountains, close to the different Gods. Also the skotino cave was a very important sacred cave. The known archaeologist sir Arthur Evans made his first investigation here in 1933 together with Pendlebury.
There have been found parts of vases, bone needles and figurines from the Neolithic to the Roman period.
The first chamber is called the Great Temple or Mega Nao and is 96m long, 36m wide and 46m high. Beyond this hall is the Hall of the Alter which is 25m long, 8m wide and 10m high. Further down some more smaller chambers follow. To the left of the Mega Nao lays the "Adyton" which is 15m long 8m wide and 2.3 m high it leads to another entrance to the cave. The most spectacular chamber, known as the "Adoration Hall", between the Altar and the "Adyton", lies 50 m underneath the level of the entrance, is vaulted and measures 12m long 12.5m wide and 10-15 m high. A large corridor, 12 m long and 2 m wide, leads to this chamber which, in winter, is flooded up to one third of its height.
Visiting this cave you will see a lot of stalagmites and stalactites in which you can imagine different shapes like the head of a woman, a smiling child, a lying dog, etc.
The entrance of the cave is free but don't forget to wear good walking shoes because it can be slippery in the cave and also take some candles with you so you can go deep into the cave.
