Situated close to the ruins of the ancient Minoan palace Knossos and with an international airport nearby, Heraklion, the largest city and capital of Crete is a fascinating place steeped in history, legend and mythology.
The Archaeological Museum houses the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization and the city is adorned with Byzantine churches and a spectacular 15th Centurey Venetian fortress & wall which circumnavigates the old town. The city is equally rich in cafes, restaurants, stores and markets, and the central square which is marked by the fountain of the Lions, is surrounded by interesting shops and great places to stop for a coffe or a bite to eat.
